The VQCC at the
“Conecta con Atlanttic” event.

04/11/2024

For the second consecutive year, on October 25th, 2024, VQCC members; Alessandro Marcomini, Vaisakh Mannalath, Ana Blázquez, Xoel Sixto and Álvaro Magdalena participated in the annual outreach event “Conecta con AtlanTTic” at the Telecommunications Engineering Faculty of the University of Vigo.

Organized by the AtlanTTic Research Center for Telecommunications Technologies, this initiative aims to bridge the gap between groundbreaking telecommunications research and the broader Vigo community.

This year, they presented their exhibition, “Information Flies at the Speed of Light” which focused on the transformative role of light in modern communications, particularly in transmitting data at unprecedented speeds over long distances.

In the morning session, the Doctoral Candidates engaged high school students through hands-on experiments and playful, interactive demonstrations on the properties of light and its importance in today’s communication networks. Through accessible experiments, students gained insight into how light enables rapid, secure data transfer and the principles behind these processes.

In the afternoon session, they welcomed families and enthusiasts, offering deeper discussions about the intersection of quantum mechanics and communication technologies. From illustrating the concepts of quantum superposition and entanglement to exploring Quantum Key Distribution, they provided examples of how these principles are applied to secure modern communication systems. More advanced visitors could also learn about their current research efforts and its potential impact on data security.

Both youth and adults responded with great enthusiasm, actively participating in discussions and showing keen interest in the possibilities that these emerging technologies present for the future.
