Guillermo Eiroa
visits the VQCC.
From June 23 to July 18, 2025, Guillermo Eiroa, a Bachelor’s student at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, completed an internship at the VQCC, where he collaborated with Margarida Pereira and Fadri Grünenfelder.
During his internship, Guillermo contributed to the development of a new lab course for bachelor’s and master’s students. His work focused on the field of Quantum Random Number Generators, conducting a thorough review of the existing literature to design an experiment that integrates both theoretical and practical components.
In this lab, students will estimate the entropy of a quantum system, perform photon detection measurements to obtain a raw random bit sequence, and then implement randomness extraction techniques. Ultimately generating sequences of genuinely random numbers.
This experiment serves as a vital learning experience in quantum technologies, as QRNGs are fundamental to applications such as Quantum Key Distribution, secure communications, and are widely used in fields ranging from banking to Monte Carlo simulations.
He also had the opportunity to take his first steps into research, gaining insight into the daily work of a quantum communications laboratory and the routines of researchers in the field. As part of his experience, he visited the experimental lab and worked hands-on with fiber optics and interferometers, deepening his understanding of practical quantum technologies.
At the VQCC, we encourage any student interested in having a similar experience to reach out through our contact section!
