Atlántico interviews
Marcos Curty.
In a recent interview with Atlántico Diario, Marcos Curty, the Scientific Director of the VQCC, discussed the future role of quantum communications in protecting our most sensitive data. Unlike classical optical communications, which use high-intensity light pulses, quantum communications operate using very low-intensity pulses that often contain just one photon. This opens up new possibilities, such as quantum cryptography, which can provide perfectly secure communications.

The interview also covered the various projects that the VQCC is currently working on, including the certification of quantum communication devices and the SAGA project from the European Space Agency (ESA), which aims to provide secure communications protected by quantum key distribution (QKD) via satellite. Another project mentioned was IberianQCI, which will establish a quantum network connecting cities such as Vigo, Santiago de Compostela, Braga, Lisbon, Madrid and Barcelona. The recent inauguration of Spain’s longest quantum communication line, running between Vigo and Santiago, was also emphasised. Funded by the Galician regional government and Spain’s Ministry of Science, this line demonstrates quantum encryption and will serve as a testing bed for future technological developments. While quantum communications have military applications, Curty emphasised that the VQCC’s current focus is on civilian use.
