VQCC Takes
Part in G-Night
On 25 September, the Vigo Quantum Communication Centre (VQCC) took part in G-Night, the European Researchers’ Night in Galicia, with an outreach activity held at the Redeiras Building in Vigo. The event offered participants an opportunity to explore the fundamental properties of light and their role in modern communication technologies.
Under the title “Information travels at the speed of light”, the activity explored how light has accompanied humanity from the very beginning from vision and the warmth we feel on our skin to its essential role in transmitting information across enormous distances.
Although our everyday experience of light represents only a small part of its physical properties, the activity invited participants to delve deeper into the science behind this phenomenon. The session explored some of the properties of light that make it possible to communicate efficiently and securely over extraordinary distances, while highlighting the physics and technology that have made it possible to connect the world as we know it today.
The activity was presented by Guillermo Currás-Lorenzo, Margarida Pereira, Fabián Lobeira, Álvaro Magdalena and Giorgia Mazzaro, who introduced participants to the principles underlying optical and quantum communication and their importance for the development of secure communication technologies.
G-Night brings science and research closer to the public through a wide range of activities held in streets, museums, educational institutions and other spaces across Galicia. Coordinated by the University of Vigo (UVigo), the event brings together more than a dozen universities, research centres and institutes, with hundreds of researchers participating in activities across seven cities.
This year’s edition was held under the theme “Creative Minds” (“Conciencias creativas”), highlighting the relationship between creativity and scientific knowledge and encouraging citizens to engage with science in new and accessible ways.
Through its participation in G-Night, the VQCC contributed to this celebration of research and innovation, offering the public an opportunity to discover how one of the most fundamental phenomena in nature, light, is at the heart of technologies that enable communication over vast distances and open new possibilities for secure and quantum communication.
