CYSAT Madrid 2026

28/10/2026

Hannah Thiel, researcher at the Vigo Quantum Communication Center (VQCC), participated in CYSAT Madrid, the Spanish edition of the leading international event dedicated to space cybersecurity, bringing together the Iberian space community and the wider European and Latin American ecosystem.

As part of the event’s technical programme, Hannah presented her talk, “Optimizing Satellite-Based Quantum Communications for the Real World”, addressing the challenges of translating quantum communication concepts from proof-of-principle demonstrations into practical, real-world systems.

Her presentation explored how the fundamental properties of quantum communication differ from the assumptions underlying conventional optical communications, and how these differences impact the design and optimization of Optical Ground Stations (OGSs) and free-space optical links.

The talk highlighted the importance of rethinking established approaches to optical communications when developing satellite-based quantum communication systems, taking into account the specific requirements and constraints of quantum technologies.

Hannah’s participation in CYSAT Madrid provided an opportunity to share VQCC’s research with the international space cybersecurity community and contribute to discussions at the intersection of quantum technologies, satellite communications, and space infrastructure security.

Through this participation, VQCC continues to strengthen its engagement with the international community working towards the development and deployment of practical quantum communication technologies.
